The Periowave Experience

Quick, easy to administer, painless, and effective, Periowave™ offers an experience unlike any other in periodontal therapy.

What to Expect in the Clinic:

Periowave™ photodisinfection is a painless procedure that is easy on both the patient and the clinician. The treatment follows a thorough scaling and root planing (SRP) procedure, and can be carried out immediately or a few days later. When the photosensitizer is placed into the diseased pocket, a small amount may leak out. This liquid is not harmful if swallowed in these small quantities. Once the light diffuser is placed in the defect, the laser unit is activated and is either held in place or moved very slightly within the pocket.

No heat is generated, and there should be no pain for the patient during this short light activation procedure. Each laser treatment cycle is only 60 seconds, although deeper pockets may require a second or third treatment.

How Periowave™ Changes the Cycle of Care:

Standard Therapy without Periowave™

The patient receives professional scaling and debridement from Dental Hygienist.

The patient leaves dental office with substantially reduced calculus, but many pathogenic bacteria remain under the gum.

Home care methods are insufficient to manage the bacteria below the gum line, and calculus re-establishes. Damage continues to occur to gingival tissue and periodontal bone structure.

The cycle begins again at the next dental appointment (usually 6 months) with another round of SRP.

Periowave™ Therapy

The patient receives Periowave™ treatment from the hygienist after scaling/debridement. The simple treatment actively destroys many of the toxins, inflammatory molecules and pathogenic bacteria that were left after scaling and root planing.

The patient leaves the dental office with significantly fewer pathogenic bacteria below the gum line. With a healthy environment in the pocket, home care can now control oral bacteria, and healing occurs.

The cycle begins again at the next dental appointment (usually 3-6 months) with another round of SRP, although a second Periowave™ treatment within a few weeks has been shown to generate superior outcomes.

At this point, the decision to re-treat with Periowave™ will depend largely on the progress of the patient.
