There are no known side-effects to Periowave™ therapy.
To date, Periowave™ has been used in over 70,000 treatments with no serious adverse events. Some patients may notice a slight blue color on or near the treated teeth related to residual photosensitizer; this is harmless and should disappear quickly. The treatment is safe for use on restorative materials, inlays, crowns, bridges, prostheses, sealants and implants.There have been no observed serious adverse events with the Periowave™ Photodisinfection system in clinical testing. However, there remains the potential for an adverse reaction in the following patients:
- Patients currently on photosensitizing medications
- Patients with severe glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency.
- Patients with allergies / hypersensitivity to methylene blue or polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA).·
- Patients with allergies / hypersensitivity to chlorhexidine.
The PW-1100 Laser base station is a class 3B laser, and requires that both operator and patient wear the provided safety glasses. The HHL-1000 is a class 1 laser which, despite delivering the same amount of power, does not require the use of safety glasses. Neither device should be used with magnifying eyewear.
Periowave removes pathogens safely without:
- Charring roots or gingival tissue
- Promoting antibiotic resistance
- Completely destroying commensal bacteria
- Causing pain or side effects
- Requiring any patient compliance or much chair time
