Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Is Periowave appropriate for me? Do I have periodontal disease?

If you have red, swollen, bleeding and tender gums, persistent bad breath or tooth sensitivity then you might have some form of periodontal or gum disease. Periodontal and gum diseases are characterized by these symptoms. Your dental professional may also note there to be pockets developing around your teeth. These pockets indicate the progression and severity of the disease and can lead to increased gum inflammation, bone loss and eventual tooth loss. For more information please see “Gum Diseases” (Link to “Gum Diseases”)

  1. What is a periodontal pocket?

The sulcus is the space between the tooth and gum. In a healthy mouth, the space is shallow and tight with no bleeding upon instrumentation or brushing and flossing. The space can be compared to the space between your neck and a turtle-neck sweater. When bacterial plaque is allowed to accumulate, the area becomes inflamed and diseased causing this space to deepen at which point it is referred to as a periodontal pocket.

  1. What is Periowave and how does it work?

The treatment principles behind Periowave are based on recent understanding of how light can be used to destroy bacteria. It has been found that by staining the bacteria with a dye and then shining a light of a very specific wavelength on the bacteria a unique reaction is produced. This painless reaction weakens the bacterial cell walls and they are destroyed. Because the bacteria are immediately destroyed they do not become resistant to this therapy like they can to antibiotic therapy.

  1. What are the advantages and benefits of Periowave compared to other types of treatments?

Periowave is quick and painless. Patients don’t feel discomfort during or after the treatment. The solution tastes good – it is minty and a bit sweet. It only takes about 60 seconds per treatment site to do ..

It is non-antibiotic and non-systemic. Periowave’s method of action is Photodisinfection – a process that does not encourage the development of antibiotic resistance. It is site specific and applied topically.

  1. Is there post treatment care required after undergoing Periowave treatment?

There is no post-treatment home care required following a Periowave treatment. The patient may brush and floss normally, or as consistent with post-SRP treatment restrictions provided by your clinician. Normal at-home oral hygiene procedures may be followed.

  1. Will I feel any pain during treatment? Is the solution going to stain my teeth?

Periowave is a painless technology and uses a non-thermal diode laser that doesn’t produce heat during the treatment.

Most patients that have been treated with Periowave said that they didn’t feel any discomfort at all. The solution tastes good and will not stain teeth.

  1. Is there any other procedure I need to undergo before the PW treatment?

Periowave treatment is frequently applied after a thorough debridement or scaling and root planing (SRP) procedure. In some cases it can be used as a maintenance therapy by itself. It works best when the plaque and calculus are removed.

  1. I am pregnant, is Periowave safe for me?

Periowave has not been tested on pregnant women. Since the Periowave photosensitizer is not a systemic agent we do not anticipate an increased risk in pregnant women, but use during pregnancy is subject to the discretion and clinical judgment of dental practitioner.

  1. I am breastfeeding, is Periowave safe to use?
